The concessionaire at Sofia Airport will modernize it with a 40m-euro loan from the EIB
The money will be used to increase the energy efficiency of the airport and protect the environment
Sofia Airport will be modernized with a loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB). Today, a loan agreement in the amount of EUR 40 million was signed between it and SOF Connect. The funds will be directed mainly to activities to improve the energy efficiency of the airport and the protection of the environment. Funding is also supported by the Connected Europe Facility.
The EIB notes that Sofia Airport is one of the largest in the region, part of the European transport network TEN-T and plays one of the leading roles in the Balkans. In this regard, the loan is fully in line with strategies to improve the capacity and security of airports in Europe.
"In 2019, 7.1 million passengers passed through Sofia Airport. And although the number of flights has decreased due to the pandemic, support for Sofia Airport is of strategic and long-term importance, "said Lilyana Pavlova, Vice President and Member of the EIB's Steering Committee
