The 400 kV internal power line connecting Varna and Burgas substations is the third project of common European interest, successfully finalized by the Electricity System Operator (ESO) in 2021. It is key to the development of trans-European infrastructure.

The 400 kV internal power line between Varna and Burgas is one of the five projects of common European interest, which the Electricity System Operator implements within the framework of Regulation 347/2013 for development of the trans-European energy infrastructure. For the construction of the domestic airline, ESO attracted a grant of BGN 60 million from the Connecting Europe Facility. The power line is 86 km long and connects Varna substation with Burgas substation. The new overhead line is of system-wide importance for the Republic of Bulgaria and will increase the security of operation of the electricity transmission system. The power line is part of a group of projects of common interest "Increasing the transmission capacity between Bulgaria and Romania", necessary for the implementation of the priority European corridor North - South. The commissioning of the new 400 kV power line between Varna and Bourgas will contribute to the improvement of the interconnection of electricity exchanges between Bulgaria and Romania and will facilitate the forthcoming unification of the markets in the day-ahead segment on the Bulgarian-Romanian border.

The power line is one of five projects of common European interest implemented by for the construction of 465 km of new 400 kV power lines and the expansion of four substations operated by the company.

The 400 kV internal power line connecting Varna and Burgas substations is the third project of common European interest, successfully finalized by ESO in 2021. In March, the Electricity System Operator completed the construction and put into operation the internal power lines between the Maritsa East substation and the Burgas substation and between the Maritsa East substation and the open distribution system of the Maritsa East 3 TPP.

The projects for construction of the 400 kV internal power line between Plovdiv substation and Maritsa East substation and of the 400 kV interconnector connecting Maritsa East substation in Bulgaria and Nea Santa substation in Greece are also in an advanced stage of implementation.

The implementation of the five 400-kilovolt power lines of common interest for the development of trans-European infrastructure will increase the electricity transmission capacity of the Bulgarian-Greek and Bulgarian-Romanian borders, improve security of electricity supply in the region, will facilitate the successful operation of market associations, as well as securing the supply of electricity from new renewable sources.
