A production record for the first half of 2022 was achieved by AES Galabovo Thermal Power Plant. For the period from January to June 2022, the plant produced 1,965,171 MWh. electricity, which is more than 30% more than the same six months of 2021. This is also the highest production result for six months since the plant went into commercial operation 11 years ago until today. With its production for the six months, the newest coal plant in Bulgaria ensured the 6-month consumption of nearly 1.1 million Bulgarian households, an analysis of the data shows.

Only in the month of June, AES Galabovo TPP generated 324,048 MWh. reliable electricity from Bulgarian coal, which is an increase of 690% compared to the month of June a year earlier. Last month, the most modern coal plant in Bulgaria provided 12% of the electricity consumption in the country. And together with the other production capacity of AES Bulgaria - wind park "St. Nikola", the two plants generated 13% of the electricity used by Bulgarian consumers in June of this year. This means that every seventh kilowatt hour of electricity consumed in Bulgaria in June is provided by AES Bulgaria.

"All this shows the key role of TPP AES Galabovo, both for the energy security of the country and for our energy independence. Because the plant uses only a Bulgarian energy resource - lignite coal mined by the state-owned "Mini Maritsa East", comments Ivan Tsankov, executive director of AES Bulgaria.

"On the EU's path to a greener energy future, coal is an important transition fuel. In Bulgaria, the coal-fired power plants in the "Maritsa East" complex are of key importance in the transformation towards a carbon-neutral energy and economy. This is also evident from the production results of AES Galabovo TPP for the first six months of 2022. By using locally mined lignite coal, AES Galabovo TPP also plays an important role in maintaining socially affordable electricity prices in the country," commented Olivier Marquet, President of AES Bulgaria.
