The President of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Abdullah Al Mandus visited NIMH today and met with the Deputy Minister of Environment and Water Reneta Koleva, with the Executive Director of the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) Prof. Tanya Marinova and scientists from the Institute.

During the meeting, Abdullah Al Mandus expressed gratitude to Bulgaria for hosting the 61st session of the IPCC, and in response, Deputy Minister Reneta Koleva pointed out that our country is grateful for the opportunity to host this event. "It is gratifying that more than 20 Bulgarian scientists have expressed their willingness to participate in the meeting to determine the scope of the seventh special report of the IPCC in Malaysia this year. This is the way for them to show their experience and upgrade their expertise, and at the same time testify to Bulgaria's commitment to dealing with the consequences of climate change," noted Deputy Minister Koleva.

"The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology is the official representative of Bulgaria in the World Meteorological Organization, and it is an honor for us to welcome the President of the WMO, Abdullah Al Mandus, to our territory," said NIMH Executive Director Prof. Tanya Marinova.

"I would like to understand how NIMH works, what difficulties it faces in its work and what opportunities it has in front of itself" - with these words, Dr. Abdullah Al Mandus addressed his hosts, who in turn introduced him to the structure of the institute, with their approaches to work in Meteorology and Hydrology, openly talked about the problems and prospects before them. Both sides agreed that more training is needed for younger scientists.

During the NIMH tour, he met the meteorologists who make short-term and long-term forecasts, discussed professional topics and hydrologists from the institute. At the conclusion of the meeting, the president of the WMO expressed his readiness to support NIMH if necessary.

Dr. Abdullah Al Mandus has been elected WCO President in 2023. He is in Bulgaria on the occasion of the 61st session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which was inaugurated on July 27 and will continue until August 2.

NIMH is the main contractor of scientific research and scientific operational activities in our country in meteorology, agrometeorology and hydrology. These activities follow the standards in the normative documents of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) at the United Nations. NIMH is the official representative of Bulgaria in the WMO, participates in the largest program of the WMO "World Weather Service" through the stations of the national meteorological network and the Regional Telecommunication Center - Sofia, responsible for the countries of South-Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
