The Council of Ministers approved a draft of an additional agreement to the "Civil Liability" insurance contract of the Kozloduy NPP.

The additional agreement will be concluded with SPAO "Ingosstrakh". It will cover the liability of Kozloduy NPP for nuclear damage during two shipments of spent nuclear fuel for technological storage and processing. These shipments were supposed to be carried out in 2022, but due to the complex international situation, they have been postponed to this year, the government press office announced after today's government meeting.

According to the Vienna Convention on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage, civil liability coverage for nuclear damage in the transport of spent nuclear fuel should be provided up to the point of delivery of the cargo.

Kozloduy NPP has an active liability insurance contract with the "Bulgarian National Nuclear Insurance Pool", which covers the plant's liability for nuclear damage in its operated nuclear installations, but does not provide coverage during the transport of spent nuclear fuel.

With the conclusion of the additional agreement, Kozloduy NPP will ensure the necessary performance of two shipments of spent nuclear fuel this year and will guarantee the safe operation of the plant and the strict fulfillment of its obligations under the Vienna Convention on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage.
