The underground gas storage "Chiren" is already filled to over 90% of the technical storage capacity. This was announced today by the gas transmission operator. The executive director of "Bulgartransgaz" Vladimir Malinov commented that for the first time in the history of the operation of the storage, such a level of filling was achieved at such an early stage. The inflated quantities of natural gas will significantly contribute to guaranteeing the security of supply during the upcoming autumn-winter season, as well as have a strategic importance for the development of the natural gas market in the region.

We remind you that according to the European Regulation 2017/1938 on measures to guarantee the security of gas supplies, in order to guarantee the energy security of the countries of the European Union, an obligation has been introduced for storage facilities to be filled to 90% of their volume no later than 1 November this year.

The availability of sufficient capacities for gas storage, production and injection is of key importance both for ensuring security of supply and for the successful entry into the market of alternative sources, including LNG, and for the development of the regional market.

The Chiren storage expansion project will ensure an increase in the volume of active gas to 1 billion m3 and daily injection and extraction capacities to 8-10 million m3.

"It is important to note that during the implementation of the construction activities under the Chiren gas refinery expansion project, the problem-free and uninterrupted injection, production and storage of natural gas is guaranteed under the current technical parameters," Malinov added.
