"Another barrier has been removed to be equal with the rest of the European Union (EU) countries in every respect. We need to get rid of the others soon - to be accepted into Schengen and join the Eurozone." This was stated by the Prime Minister Academician Nikolay Denkov, after the European Commission announced today that it is terminating the monitoring of Bulgaria and Romania through the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism. The monitoring of the two countries was established when they joined the European Union in 2007.

"On behalf of the Bulgarian government, I thank the European Commission and the heads of European countries for assessing the progress of Bulgaria and Romania in implementing the rule of law and removing the special verification mechanism for our countries," the prime minister said.

From this moment on, the same assessment mechanism as for all other EU member states will be applied to Bulgaria regarding compliance with the rule of law.
