The Deputy Minister of Energy, Georgi Samandov, will participate in the ceremony for the completion of the rehabilitation of the "Sestrimo" HPP, which is the second stage of the "Belmeken-Sestrimo" cascade.

The event, to which the Minister of Environment and Waters Petar Dimitrov, ambassadors, experts and other guests have been invited, will take place today.

With the official completion of the renovation of the "Sestrimo" HPP, the final of the rehabilitation of the entire "Belmeken-Sestrimo-Momina gorge" cascade is also marked - the largest in Bulgaria.

The plant has been in operation since 1973.

The Belmeken-Sestrimo-Momina Gorge cascade includes the Belmeken Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Power Plant (PSHPP), the Sestrimo Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP), the Momina Gorge Hydroelectric Power Plant, the Belmeken Dam, the Stankovi baraki day leveler and the Momina gorge day leveler. It is located on the northeastern slopes of the Rila mountain and extends from 1920 m.a.s.l. at the Belmeken dam up to 251 m above sea level at the Momina Klisura hydroelectric power station. The total installed capacity of the cascade is 735 MW in generator mode and 104 MW in pump mode.

On 18.05.2018, a contract was signed between NEC EAD and the KONČAR KET - ČKD BLANSKO - RUDIS consortium for the rehabilitation of the three plants from the cascade - PAVEC Belmeken, Sestrimo HPP and Momina Klisura HPP.

With its 31 HPPs and PSHPP’s with an installed capacity of 2737 MW in turbine mode and 931 MW in pump mode, NEC is the largest producer of energy from renewable sources in the country.
