Prof. Atanas Semov and Prof. Stefan Hadjitodorov from BAS again proposed renaming the airport in Sofia to "Vasil Levski"
Prof. Atanas Semov and Prof. Stefan Hadjitodorov from BAS once again raised the question of renaming Sofia Airport after the Apostle of Freedom - Vasil Levski. "This is an extremely important initiative for Bulgaria, and I am glad that we have your support and understanding for it. It is important not only that the front door of the state has a name, but also that it is the name of the most iconic and the most majestic European of Bulgaria - Vasil Levski, "said Prof. Semov at the beginning of the meeting, which took place in the Ministry of Transport and the announcements at the invitation of Minister Krasimira Stoyanova.
In order for a presidential decree to be issued to rename such an object of national importance, a positive opinion from the Ministry of Transport and Communications is required, which contains a financial framework and specific steps and deadlines that must be taken to make the name change a fact. Minister Krasimira Stoyanova stated that she welcomes the idea and, together with the competent administration and the concessionaire of Sofia Airport, will start work on preparing the opinion. The meeting was also attended by Jesus Cabayero, CEO of SOF Connect, operator of Sofia Airport.
The idea of renaming the airport has been discussed since 2009, and in 2017 the proposal for the name of the Apostle of Freedom was made by BAS scientists and received great support, but was not implemented. Polls were also conducted, which showed widespread approval for the initiative to name the national airport after our brightest historical figure. The historical name of the airport is "Hostile" and it can still be found on some maps and locations. The Sofia airport itself has military hours, which are regularly used for the needs of citizens and the army.
