The European Commission today called on Bulgaria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Croatia, Cyprus, Malta, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia and Slovakia to urgently submit their final national energy and climate plans. This was reported by the BTA correspondent in Brussels.

The Commission has decided to initiate criminal proceedings against the mentioned countries. The EC clarifies that national plans are crucial to achieving the agreed EU targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, for the share of energy from renewable sources and for energy efficiency. According to the plans, the EC can assess the possibilities of meeting the goals in these areas by 2030.

EU countries had until June 30 this year to submit the plans, and the EC has so far received 14 final plans. According to the commission, the parties against whom criminal proceedings are opened are in violation of their obligations. The specified countries have two months to respond, after which the procedure can continue, the announcement states.

Currently, the Ministry of Environment and Water is carrying out an eco-assessment of the Bulgarian "Climate and Energy" plan, and it is not clear when it will be handed over to Brussels.
